Motto: Preparing Students for a Global Future
Mission:
We seek to educate our students in the tradition of excellence set by Fudan so that our students may engage the global future with creative, critical, and compassionate mind.
Building on the principle of Fudan, we are focused on laying solid educational foundation for our students. Fudan High School students are well known not only for their academic achievements, but also for their moral standards. We wish to continue this tradition. FIS is a student-centered school which recognizes that students’ needs are the driving force in the learning environment: we are interested in individual development as well as the sustainable growth of the school.
We strive to seek the truth from the facts, to pursue creativity and utility, and to further school innovation in education.
Values:
Courage, Integrity, Spirit of Generosity and Academics
About:
Fudan International School (FIS) is affiliated with the High School Affiliated to Fudan University (HSAFU). Its institutional structure is similar to other international schools in Shanghai that are affiliated with long established public Chinese high schools. We operate independently with regard to curriculum and faculty hiring but are under the governance of HSAFU (including budget issues). HSAFU is ranked amongst the top three high schools in Shanghai and has a number of sister schools (including Sidwell Friends, Landon and Dalton) and every year sends students for studying abroad. HSAFU is the only school in Shanghai selected by the ASSIST program to participate in its junior year abroad program.
Fudan International School is one of the three divisions within the HSAFU. Parent organization Fudan University was established in 1905 and it was initially known as Fudan Public School or Fudan College. The two Chinese characters Fudan (復旦) were chosen by the distinguished educator in modern Chinese history, Father Ma Xiangbo S.J. (马相伯), from the Confucian Classics (尚书大传•虞夏传): "Itinerant as the twilight, sun glows and moon luminesces". Fudan University is one of the leading universities in China and is a member of the Universitas 21. They currently have affiliations with top universities around the world including London School of Economics, Yale and Keio University.
In 2002, HSAFU began accepting students with foreign passports to study in Chinese. Most of these students take the national college entrance exam with the hopes of getting admitted to key universities in China.
In 2006, FIS was founded to provide international students with English language education based on Western pedagogical models, while also teaching about and supporting the Chinese traditions of our wider school community. English is the language of instruction. The school has two semesters and four quarters with a total of 182 school days in 2009/10 year.
