Sam Matthews, music lecturer at Fudan International School, has a multi-faceted career as a professional musician and that of an educator. In the field of chamber music, Mr. Matthews has collaborated with such international artists as Donald Sutherland (organ recitalist), Amit Peled (cello soloist), Zhang Le (Queen Elizabeth Prize Winner, former Met player), Xu Zhong (pianist and conductor), performing on four continents. As an orchestral musician, he has performed in such orchestras as the Singapore Symphony, Shanghai Sinfonietta, and the Akron Symphony. Mr. Matthews has also given numerous solo recitals and performances in the Mid-Atlantic region (USA), as well as appeared a soloist with the Springfield Symphony (USA). He also has recording credits in popular music and movies, most recently with HBOFilms.

In addition to performing as a cellist, Mr. Matthews is making a name for himself in the field of music education. He is an avid supporter of youth orchestras, and has conducted such ensembles as the Akron Youth Symphony, Baltimore School for the Arts Orchestra, Shanghai American School Orchestras, as well as being the founder of the Shanghai International Youth Orchestra. In 2007, he joined the Yale-China Music exchange, a program thru which Mr. Matthews taught ensemble playing and practice techniques, as well as joined in concerts along side Chinese students in Shanghai, Hunan and Anhui Provinces. Recent engagements include being the guest conductor for the Dulwich College Combined Orchestra Festival this November in Shanghai. Mr. Matthews received a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Cello Performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Music of the Johns Hopkins University where his major teachers were Amit Peled and Mihaly Virizlay.
