FIS Monthly Bulletin December

Dear FIS Parents,

On November 14, we participated in a wonderful sports competition at Fudan High School. Members of FIS were involved in many activities and three of our students won third place in the competition.  Our cheerleading team also received the Encouragement Award for their performance in the opening ceremonies. Many of our faculty members took part in the events and left a deep impression among the students and staff of the whole school.

This coming December we are looking forward to another school-wide activity.  Fudan High School will hold its annual Arts Festival during the first week of the month. We hope our students will look forward to the activities and enjoy themselves very much.

Christmas is just around the corner.  Our Christmas vacation is from the 20th of December, 2008 (Saturday) to the 4th of January, 2009 (Sunday).

School will resume on the 5th of January, 2009 (Monday).

I would also like to inform you of some changes in the school calendar.  First of all, winter vacation will start from the 17th of January and end on the 3rd of February 2009.

Therefore, the last school day of the first semester is on the 16th of January, and the second semester will begin on the 4th of February.

Merry Christmas to you all!

Best regards,

A cultural and educational trip to Turkey has been organized by the school.  This will be an exchange program between OZEL EGE LISESI SCHOOL and FIS.

Eighteen students and five teachers will go to Turkey at the end of January to represent FIS. For one week, our 18 students will go to OZEL EGE LISESI School and take lessons. Our teachers will have meetings with the teachers of OZEL EGE LISESİ about future projects. In the second week, our group and a group from our sister school will visit historical sights and museums (Ephesus, Temple of Artemis, Hierapolis, etc.) around Izmir. These places are the most famous cities left from the civilizations of the Hellenistic and Roman Periods. Our tour will also stop for two days in Istanbul and will have a chance to see sights from the Byzantine and Turkish era (Topkapi Museum, Grand Bazaar, Byzantine Hipodrome, Spice Bazaar, Dolmabahce Palace, etc…).
We are hoping our students will enjoy this trip very much.

On November 25 and 27, Middle and High School art students went to the Museum of Contemporary Art for a field trip.

It was a very positive experience for students to see what is happening in the contemporary art world.  The artwork at MOCA is truly innovative and technically sophisticated.  This field trip has inspired student's creativity and opened their
minds to a better understanding of the contemporary art world.  I believe the study of art to be an important part of creative problem solving, which is crucial in today's world. There are so many problems arising now that will need to be tackled with a tremendous amount of creativity in the next few decades; particularly those ecological and economic. The study of art and creative exploration are an integral part of that learning process... this learning process also facilitates critical thinking and thinking outside the box.

Twenty-two Middle School students participated in the American Mathematics Competition 8 on November 18.  We are hoping our students will win an AMC 8 Winner Pin, Certificates for Honor, Outstanding Achievement and Participation.

Six High School students also took the Sun Life Financial Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge.   We congratulate those six students who showed great courage in taking this very difficult exam.

We hope they will get good scores and awards when the results are published.
